Kigali Genocide Memorial Center

Family Destination / Genocide Memorial

From all walks of the world, travelers visit Rwanda to mourn and discover the history behind the Genocide that happened in April 1994. Almost 250 000 victims of the Tutsi tribe are buried within the grounds of the Kigali Genocide Memorial.

The center established to educate visitors about the genocide as well as a tribute to those who perished, a reminder of the evil act of genocide and appeal that it should never be repeated in Rwanda or anywhere in the world.

The center has mass graves lying peacefully in the lush garden beautifully kept within the serene rose gardens and cascading fountains surrounding the center providing a haven for those who need to compose themselves after their visit.

The museum features giant wall displays, archival documents, photos, video footage, and weapons, exhibits of remains, photographs, and personal belongings like clothing, shoes, and others of the genocide victims. There is a section in the museum that pays tribute to the young children who fell victim to the killers’ machetes.

The genocide memorial centers are spread all over the country, wander around the centers and discover the history of that led to the horrific genocide which lasted 100 days.

Kigali Genocide

Kigali Genocide Memorial Center

The Kigali genocide memorial center is the most famous of all the genocide memorial centers and is only 10 minutes’ drive away from the city center in Gisozi. The center is a final resting place for 250,000 Rwandans killed in the genocide. It has different exhibit places with space of skulls of survivors and their personal belongings, photographs of survivors and genocide perpetrators.

With another section with photographs and descriptions of genocides that have happened all over the world and outside the building is a garden and different mass graves where the victims were buried.

Nyamata Genocide Memorial

The center in Bugesera is a burial site for over 25,000 Rwanda genocide victims and is located 30 km south of Kigali . The Tutsi people gathered here considering it a safe sanctuary but the church was a pure death trap. The Tutsis had locked themselves up in the church but were attacked by Hutu militias with hand grenades and  machetes.

Here you will find clothes and National ID cards of the dead victims on the church pews  and the altar cloth still stained with blood from the massacre of the several victims.

Murambi Genocide Memorial

Murambi Genocide Memorial is the most difficult memorial to visit because of the bodies and skeletons of genocide victims on display. The Murambi genocide memorial is set on the grounds of former Murambi technical school  where the Tutsi people were advised to hide but alas, it was a trap. After gathering they were attacked by the militia.

Nyanza Genocide Memorial

Nyanza genocide memorial holds the graves of more than 10,000 genocide victims and are located on the grounds of Kigali’s Ecole Technique Officielle in Kicukiro district. Th genocide anniversary are often commemorated on these grounds which happen yearly in April.

Ntarama genocide memorial

Ntarama genocide memorial is a former catholic church where 5000 people were massacred and is an hour’s drive from Kigali. the Tutsis came here for refuge assuming that it would be safe but were shocked by attacks from the Hutu militias, who in some place accessed the building by removing bricks one by one.

Nyarubuye genocide memorial

Nyarubuye genocide memorial centre is where 2000 Rwandan were killed with the then mayor Sylvestre Gacumbitsi distributing arms and encouraging Hutu’s to use rape and later maim and kill the Tutsi’s. Nyarubuye was restored into a church and is currently used by people for worship alongside the memorial centre.

Bisesero genocide memorial

Bisesero genocide memorial is site to 40,000 victims and is located 60 km from Kibuye. This genocide memorial site is a story of resistance of the Tutsi’s against their attackers in the hills of Bisesero where they used  stones and sticks to counter the Hutu attack.
