It is the smallest park in Uganda with 260 square kilometer acreage yet conveniently accessible and located close to many other sites worth visiting like the Igongo Cultural Center and the Equator.

Wildlife in Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park has a varied mosaic of habitats and landscapes inclusive of forests rich in acacia tree valleys, grasslands, seasonal and permanent swamps. The rich vegetation, in turn, inhabits a variety of mammals and bird species. The woody vegetation of Lake Mburo is dominated by Acacia species, Olea species, and Boscia species while the fringing swamps in the park also hide secretive papyrus specialists such as the red, black and yellow papyrus gonolek.

The park has more than 68 mammal species, including zebra, impala, topi, eland, bushbuck, buffalo, warthog, leopard, hyena, Vervet Monkeys and jackal and many more. For enthusiastic birders, the park is home to more than 315 different species of birds including the rare shoebill stork, papyrus yellow warbler, African finfoot, saddle-billed stork, brown chested wattled plover, Carruthers cisticola, Tabora cisticola, great snipe, Abyssinian ground hornbill, African fish eagle, saddle-billed stork and white-winged warbler.

Accommodation in Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is one of the smallest parks in Uganda but is frequented by travellers due to its ability to appease the eye. The Park has accommodation for all classes of people and some of them include: Arcadia Cottages,Mantana tented camp, Rwakobo rock, Mihingo Lodge, Eagles Nest Lodge, Mburo safari lodge, Mpogo lodge and many more.

Accessing Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is situated in Mbarara district and is about 3.5 hours drive from Kampala road, making it the closest national park to Kampala. The park Can be accessed in two gates,  namely Sanga gate accessible when one is driving from Kampala side and Nshara gate accessible when one is coming from Mbarara side

Lake Mburo National Park is mostly used as a stopover to reduce the journey to South weatern Uganda.. Be prepared to see much wildlife on your way to the park. You will enjoy the sights of the Ankole Longhorn cattle graze along the wild animals in harmony.

Most travellers use Lake Mburo as a stopover on their way to Bwindi Impenetrable national, though the park has a lot to offer as a hideaway to a surprising diversity of plants and animals.

Wildlife Viewing Boat Safaris

The boat safari takes you on an up-close adventure of the animals in their habitat. Crocodiles crawling into the water, hippos dunking themselves in the lake to escape, zebras, antelopes.

Salt Lick

Indulge in a guided walk with an armed ranger towards the salt lick and then you will see the animals as they lick the salty soil that are found there.

It’s also a great opportunity for the visitors to view the antelopes, zebras, eland and many more as a platform was set above the salt lick from which to view and take photos without disrupting the animals into running away from sight.

Rubanga Forest

Rubanga Forest inhabits 40 bird species and various tree species like the Fig, Palm, Acacia and Markhamia trees. The forest offers rewarding views to an enthusiastic birder but this will require prior notice to the Uganda Wildlife Authority personnel.

Fishing

A safari to this lake-filled national park with 5 lakes in it will take you on a fishing expedition or experience with Mazinga set aside for fishing. For one enthusiastic about sports fishing, it can be done here albeit with a license. The tilapia is a local favorite and one likely to be your catch among the 6 fish species in the lake.

Horseback Safari

Lake Mburo National Park is the only destination that offers horseback safaris.These safaris are offered by Mihingo Lodge where you get up close with the animals as you ride beside them on a funfield adventure.

Bicycling safaris

Bike ride through the rocky rough terrain, it is a challenging thrill for cyclists because of the uneven terrain which gives off the sound of running engines.

Nocturnal game drive.

On a nocturnal drive, there is a chance to see porcupines, bush babies and even leopards on parole. It is advised that you are guided by an armed Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) game ranger as you explore wildlife .
