Get marveled by the verdant, rich tropical Rain-forest of the Kyambura Game Reserve, a world on its own. The stunning Kyambura Gorge is located in the far eastern corner of Queen Elizabeth National Park in southwestern Uganda.
Kyambura Game Reserve was formed to serve as a buffer zone to the Queen Elizabeth National Park but this beautiful gorge serves as an oasis for both animals seeking refreshment and for humans on adventures.
The Savannah above and the light bursting through offers brightness on the beautiful tree canopy within this under-ground forest comprised of rich plant species that inhabit the great assortment of the wonders within the Kyambura Gorge.
Kyambura Game Reserve is home to a variety of wildlife, including the primates including chimpanzees that live in the deep and ancient forested gorge running through the African savannah cut off from the rest of the jungle.
Drained by River Kyambura, the gorge’s landscape is among the most impressive in Uganda in the sunken tropical forest in the Western Rift Valley in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Wildlife in the Kyambura Game Reserve
Kyambura is one of the places in Uganda where one can see the habituated chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Kyambura Gorge is home to other species such as the red-tailed monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, baboons as well as vervet monkeys. The area also supports a diversity of avian species such as African Finfoot, the blue-headed bee-eater,different falcons and huge forest hogs can also be seen from time to time within this area.
The green riverine forest also offers shelter to several forest birds in addition to other species among which the Martial Eagle, Bar-tailed Godwit, Black-rumped Buttonquail, Shoebill, African Skimmer, Lesser and Greater Flamingo, Chapin’s Flycatcher, White-tailed Lark, Corncrake, Pink Backed Pelican, Verreaux’s Eagle Owl, Papyrus Canary, White-winged Warbler, African Broadbill, Papyrus Gonolek and the Black Bee-eater.
Accessing the Game Reserve
The Kyambura Gorge is located in the North-Eastern side of Queen Elizabeth National Park, approximately 30 km from QENP Headquarters. Spanning a distance of 16km south of Lake George and Kyambura Gorge links to the Kazinga Channel forming the northern boundary of the reserve. Village and plantations lie to the south.
Traveling from Kampala through Mbarara it is 420 kilometers from Kampala through Fort Portal it is 410 Kilometers.
Kyambura Gorge can also be accessed through flights available from the International Airport in Entebbe to the Airstrip in Mweya.

Kyambura Gorge is surrounded with many establishments in the outskirts of Queen Elizabeth National park. They vary between the high-class facilities and the budget lodges including Katara lodge, Jacana Safari Lodge, Kingfisher camp as well as Kyambura Gorge Safari Lodge.
While visiting the Kyambura Gorge, you can also opt for accommodation in Queen Elizabeth National Park as it is located near the park.
The steep slopes of the Kyambura Gorge are sheltered by a verdant riverine forest, which is habitat for a diversity of wildlife and is a vital water source to the wild animals including the renowned chimpanzees, the black & white Colobus monkeys, olive baboons as well as the red tailed monkeys, among many other species of primates.
Activities within Kyambura Reserve
Kyambura gorge has some of the most incredible views in Uganda with a great viewpoint platform from which you can take some great pictures of the Kyambura Gorge surrounded by the Savannah and a rich tropical Forest. They are plenty of attractions you can enjoy here including;
Chimpanzee trekking
Chimpanzee tracking is an interesting encounter with the amazing chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Some of the Chimpanzees in this gorge have been habituated in a process that took close to 2 years meaning that these chimpanzees are familiar with humans and can carry on their day to day activities in the presence of humans.
The chimp trekking experience is usually combined with activities within Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Guided nature walks and forest walks
These walks bring you closer to nature as you adventure and explore this amazing valley, game viewing of Black and white colobus monkeys, giant forest hogs and the red-tailed monkeys, in addition to many others.
