Standing amidst the great three of the Virunga Volcanoes, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park was established to protect the mountain gorillas and the Golden monkeys as their habitat.The park derives its name from Kinyarwanda word “Gahinga” that means “Pile of volcanic lava stone heaps.
Bordered to the south by Rwanda and to the west by the Democratic Republic of Congo, the park presents a silent invitation to explore the amazing cocktail of rain and bamboo forests, golden monkeys and peaceful mountain gorillas
The Park is a stunning place with the three volcanoes alongside a beautiful swamp at the top of Mount Mgahinga, Muhavura has a crater lake and the Sabinyo gives you an amazing experience as you climb to its summit you set a foot in 3 countries; Uganda DRC and Rwanda.
Wildlife in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has great biological importance because, throughout the climatic changes of the Pleistocene ice ages, mountains such as these provided a refuge for mountain plants and animals, which moved up or down the slopes as the climate became warmer or cooler.
The Virungas have several animals that have been recorded within, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is mostly popular for its mountain gorillas and golden monkeys though they have a wide range of wildlife.
Gorillas
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has only one Gorilla family that can be tracked -the Nyakagezi gorilla group.Years before this group of Gorillas could move from country to country until it has to make Mgahinga it’s home, now also permits for tracking gorillas in this park are now available in Uganda and you are advised to book in advance.
Mgahinga is home to 76 species of mammals, although they are difficult to glimpse in the wild forest vegetation. They include giant forest hogs, bush pigs, forest buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks, golden cats, side-striped jackals, black-fronted duikers and South African porcupines.
The varied habitats of the park arehome to a variety of birds with 179-184 species recorded. The list includes the Ibis, Pin-tailed Whydah, Speckled Mousebird, Stone Chat, Grey-capped Warbler, Wax Bills, Yellow-vented Bulbul, Firefinch, White-naped Raven, Black Kite, Rwenzori Turaco, Blue-headed Coucal, Paradise Fly-catcher, Rwenzori Batis, Double-collared Sunbird, Rwenzori Nightjar.
When to visit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park will take you on a perfect adventure to see the endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys within the park.Most tourists go for gorilla safaris during the dry months of June-October and December to March.
The park experiences two rainy seasons; March-May and September-November with October as the wettest month, with 250mm of rain and July the driest with just 10mm.
Accessing Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in South Western Uganda and it takes about 8-10 hours from Kampala to get to the park. The park can also be accessed from Rwanda and is about 6 hours drive from Kigali, Rwanda.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has one main entrance, the Ntebeko gate which is accessible from Kisoro Town.
The park can also be accessed by air, aerolink provides scheduled flights from Entebbe International airport to Kisoro Airstrip.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of the parks that inhabits some of the population of the endangered mountain gorilla. The Nyakagezi group of the gorillas that used to migrate now settled in Uganda’s Mgahinga and is now visited here.
Visit the Batwa
The Batwa used to live with the gorillas in harmony within the Mgahinga Forests until they were evacuated to preserve the remaining gorillas. This walk is conducted by Batwa guides who provide insights into their traditional forest life and culture.
Bird Watching
The Birding Safari takes you through different places including the Buffalo Wall, forests, wetlands and other habitats. Some of the birds to see include ibis, speckled mouse, fire finch and many others found in the area.
Golden Monkey Trekking
The golden monkeys are an ancient group of monkeys that are only found in the Virunga alongside the mountain gorillas.These primates are small and fast which makes golden monkey trekking a rather active adventure
Garama Cave Exploration
The 342m long Garama Cave lies beneath a plateau northern edge of the park, 3km from Ntebeko. It is set in the former farmland zone but in earlier times, the cave forest when it was occupied periodically by Batwa who used it as a council chamber and a retreat.
Hiking the Virunga Volcanoes
Mgahinga merits a visit simply to appreciate the scenery on different hikes ranging from the 8-hour return trip to the summit of Mt. Muhabura to gentle strolls across the lower slopes beneath the magnificent three peak backdrop.
- Mount Gahinga
Mgahinga National Park derives its name from this volcanic mountain and it lies on the border between Uganda and Rwanda. The word Gahinga comes from the local Rufumbira dialect meaning “a small pile of stones”
- Mount Sabyinyo
Sabinyo has three peaks. Sabyinyo is a local word that comes from the word ‘Iryinyo’, meaning tooth. The borders of three countries converge on this summit and you will find yourself simultaneously in Rwanda, Congo and Uganda.
- Mount Muhavura
This classic volcanic cone is capped by a small but lake; a modest reward for a 5 hour trek that rises 1700m to over 41OOm.”
