Named after the dramatic Murchison Falls, which were christened by Sir Samuel Baker; Uganda’s Murchison Falls National Park is the country’s largest protected wildlife sanctuary. A wonderful tapestry of natural landscapes awaits visitors to the park. Here, the mighty Nile River bisects flourishing savannahs, flanked by lush riverine woodlands, before bursting through a chasm in the Rift Valley escarpment to form the raging Murchison Falls.
Murchison Falls
Murchison Falls National Park is where the Nile explodes through a narrow gorge and cascades down to become a placid river that is very popular to travelers. The Murchison Falls are one of the highlights of the park, on a point along the Nile dividing it into two sectors.
At the peak of the Murchison Falls, the waters of the Nile force their way through a small slit within the rocks, which is 23 feet wide, and topples to 141 feet below with a thunderous roar forming a residual water stray that forms a beautiful rainbow.
Located in the northern region of the Albertine Rift Valley, the park is recognized as one of the best National parks in Uganda and well visited too.
Also known as the Kabalega Falls, the waterfall breaks the stunning Victoria Nile, that flows across Uganda’s northern region from the vast Lake Victoria to the deep Lake Kyoga and continuing to the northern tip of Lake Albert within the western arm of the great East African Rift.
Wildlife
Dominated by rivers, woodland,savanna, wetlands and tropical forest habitats, the park is inhabited by 76 different mammal species and 450 different bird species. Some of the mammals are leopard, elephant, lion, hippopotamus, bushbucks, Uganda kob, waterbucks and warthogs, giraffes, Jackson’s hartebeest, hyenas, Rothschild’s giraffe, hartebeest, oribi, warthog,Cape buffalo,and Uganda kob. Along the shores of the Nile and within the waters you will see lots of hippos and crocodiles among other resident creatures.
The park is also home to over 450 recorded birds species including the rare shoebill stork and is also home to 23 Albertine rift endemics given its location in the western arm of the east African rift valley.
Kaniyo Pabidi forest is a sanctuary for many kinds of primates including chimpanzees,baboons and 360 species of bird.

Wildlife Viewing Game Drives
Game drives are the most attracting encounter of wildlife in this park, the Wildlife Game drives take place within the Buligi game tracks on the northern bank offering spectacular scenery of animals.
Boat Safari on the Nile
Launch trips are one of the best ways to have a memorable experience in Murchison Falls National Park. You can decide to take a boat safari upstream to the bottom of the fall from where you will watch the great frontier falls and great scenery of wildlife. A launch trip to the Delta is highly recommended for birdwatchers mostly in the morning to the Nile – Lake Albert delta.
Birding
Birding in the park can be experienced on an African game drive, on a launch trip and on nature walks. Birders get to enjoy a distinct birdlife, including savannah forest birds, water birds and Albertine rift endemics. Murchison falls national park main birding attraction is the shoebills that are commonly sighted in the dry season.
