Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of the destinations in Uganda that have it is called the Pearl of Africa. Abundant with wildlife the park is home to all forms of wildlife; from mammals like the African elephant and vast primate species to the smallest of rodents.
The picturesque with undulating terrains, diverse vegetation coupled with abundant scenery of the Kazinga Channel as it connects Lake George to Edward Kaziga channel at 40km, the Kyambura gorge that is carved by the Kyambura river flowing across the rift valley towards the Kazinga channel.
Maramagambo forest stretches up to the eastern escarpment with the equatorial sun reflecting over the different wildlife and the ishasha sector that harbours a variety of wildlife including the ishasha‘s tree climbing lions and the shoebill stork.
Queen Elizabeth National Park has a wide variety of habitats ranging from savanna and wetlands of the forest. Lake Edward, the kazinga channel, Lake George, the Ishasha River and series of crater lakes lead to a diverse ecosystem and dominate landscape offering wonderful wildlife viewing opportunities.
Wildlife in Queen Elizabeth National Park
With a variety of Flora and Fauna, the park is acknowledged to be a habitat to over 95 mammal species with about 612 species of birds. The park has five levels of vegetation including the bushy grassland, Acacia woodland, Lakeshore or swamp vegetation along with forest grassland.
The various species that have settled in the park include Cape buffalo, Uganda kob, waterbuck, warthog,tree climbing lion, leopard, hyena, giant forest hog as well as elephants,topis can only be discovered in Ishasha and 10 primate species including chimpanzee, black and white Colobus monkeys, baboons, red tailed and vervet monkeys are found in Kyambura gorge and Maragambo forest.
The park also has a remarkable bird list that including African skimmer, Chapin’s flycatcher, Pink-backed pelicans, Papyrus canary, Shoebill stork, martial eagle, black-rumped buttonquail as well as the great flamingos.

Kazinga Channel
The Kazinga channel is about 40m long adjoining Lake Gorge to Lake Edward with a perfect view of the parks’ major wildlife ventures. Its acknowledged that the plains of channel are focal points for African game viewing animals like buffalo, elephants and other animals that dwell in the grassland thickets of the Northern Kazinga close to Mweya.
The peninsula is the heart of sightseeing activities as you explore the park as well as the distant parts of the peninsula.
Ishasha Tree Climbing Lions
Ishasha is the most accessible spot for lions is in the eastern part of Kasenyi plains and the Kasese road where they quarry on the big inhabitants of Uganda KobsThe Park’s distant southern segment gives a genuine Africa wilderness experience. Among the inhabitants in this place include savannah woodland, Ishasha River along with Lake Edward that has a diversity of wildlife such as climbing lions, rare shoebill stork and many others.

Accessing Queen Elizabeth National Park
Queen Elizabeth National Park is located in western Uganda within the districts of Kasese, Bundibugyo and Bushenyi. The from Kampala is either on tarmac through Mbarara (420 Km) or Fort Portal via Kasese (410kms).
The park is 5-6 hours from Kampala on surface road via Mbarara and can also be reached via Ishasha sector, which is south of Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Wildlife Viewing Game Drives
The major highlight of a visit to the park are the scenic game drives that give you a chance to view even the most elusive of the park’s fauna. There are a number of trials through designed for wildlife viewing.
During the game drives, you could spot an elephant, the largest land mammal skillfully using its trunk to feed, a lion preying on an antelope or a hyena patiently waiting to devour the lion’s leftovers from a distance, Buffalo herds and Uganda kobs traverse the game park all day long. Warthogs, leopards, the giant forest hog are among the others you are very likely to meet on your game drive.
Boat Safari on the Kazinga Channel

During the cruise, one gets to enjoy the various sights and sounds that the park’s rich aquatic life, large hippopotamuses taking their dips in the waters, the fierce Nile crocodiles basking lazily on the channel banks for a feel of the warm sun.
Birding Safaris

The tree-climbing lions of Ishasha
Here lions perched up on acacia, in the fig trees you will catch glimpses of the enchanting sight to behold.
The Ishasha sector is found on the journey to or from Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Besides the amazing tree-climbing king of the jungle, the sector is also home to other animals such as herds of buffaloes, large numbers of elephants, warthogs and antelopes all which make for a memorable trip to the game park.
